Summer Reading: One World-Many Stories Learns about Passover and Hanukkah

Sometimes the whole world is right at our doorstep, and we don't even realize it. Special people with interesting stories of their own are all around us.

On Tuesday, July 19th, we learned about Passover and Hanukkah, two of the principle holidays celebrated by people of the Jewish faith. Budd Sturm, of The Chocolate Moose, discussed the meaning of Passover. It is a very important celebration and includes the seder dinner, which includes many symbolic foods.
Budd showed us his Passover plate, which has a special place for each of the symbolic foods. During the seder, the youngest child asks, "Why is this night different from all other nights?" which opens the story of Passover.

He also told us about Hanukkah,
an eight-day holiday that is sometimes called the Festival of Lights. Each day, a candle on the mennorah is lit each day, and children receive a gift on each of the seven days. Here is a picture of Budd explaining and showing a traditional and a modern mennorah.

Dreidels are
traditional gifts, and the symbols on them have historic importance.

Thank you, Budd, for sharing your heritage with us!
