Farmland Public Library welcomes author Paisley Hansen for a very special Story Time on Saturday, October 22 at 10am. The reading will be followed by a drawing activity and book signing.
Paisley was sixteen years old when she wrote and illustrated Chubbi Bunni and the Pastry Shoppe. She is currently a senior at Union High School in Modoc, Indiana, and plans to pursue a career in art and writing. She currently works as a freelance illustrator.
The book is colorful and fun for children of all ages, and it offers an important message, as well. Chubbi Bunni is a good little rabbit who thinks that only pastries and pies are good to eat, but with the help of friends he finds more energy and happiness by eating healthier foods, with pastries in moderation.
Hansen will offer a drawing activity following the reading. Snacks will be provided. Copies of Chubbi Bunni and the Pastry Shoppe will be available for sale.

One World-Many Stories : Ole Brumm is Winnie the Pooh--in Norway!
On Thursday, July 21st, we were visited by Aurora Green. She read a story about Ole Brumm, a story in Norwegian about Winnie the Pooh. He and his friends worked together to get ingredients for Nut Cakes. A student read the English translation as Aurora read in Norwegian, so we could all understand the story as it progressed.
Norway's flag is red with a blue and white insignia. We made bookmarks that showed the Norwegian flag while we listened to a folk song called "King of the Campground." Camping is a favorite activity of Norwegians.
Thank you for sharing with us, Aurora!

Summer Reading: One World-Many Stories Learns about Passover and Hanukkah
Sometimes the whole world is right at our doorstep, and we don't even realize it. Special people with interesting stories of their own are all around us.
On Tuesday, July 19th, we learned about Passover and Hanukkah, two of the principle holidays celebrated by people of the Jewish faith. Budd Sturm, of The Chocolate Moose, discussed the meaning of Passover. It is a very important celebration and includes the seder dinner, which includes many symbolic foods. Budd showed us his Passover plate, which has a special place for each of the symbolic foods. During the seder, the youngest child asks, "Why is this night different from all other nights?" which opens the story of Passover.
He also told us about Hanukkah, an eight-day holiday that is sometimes called the Festival of Lights. Each day, a candle on the mennorah is lit each day, and children receive a gift on each of the seven days. Here is a picture of Budd explaining and showing a traditional and a modern mennorah.
Dreidels are traditional gifts, and the symbols on them have historic importance.
Thank you, Budd, for sharing your heritage with us!

One World Many Stories -- Viva Italia!
The Summer Readers learned about Italy with Mrs. Beth Dalton on Monday, July 18th. She recently took a group of Ball State University students to Italy and England for a field study and had lots of pictures to share with us.She showed us a book that explained the ancient Roman ruins, showed us pictures of important Italian landmarks and artwork, and then read a traditional Italian story about the Fairy Aurelia.
Coloring pages with Italian words were available at the library later that afternoon.
Thank you, Beth, for sharing your stories! And Thank you to The Chocolate moose for allowing us to meet in your room!

One World Many Stories Visits Turkey!
On Saturday, July 9, the summer readers had a great time learning about Turkey while visiting with our guest, Ms. Yasemin Tunc, from Ball State University.
Yasemin told us interesting facts about Turkey and then read some traditional Turkish folktales -- in Turkish as well as in English! The language sounded very new to our ears, but beautiful, too. Yasemin also helped us to compare our alphabet with the Turkish alphabet, and we found a few interesting differences and new sounds. We had a great time learning to count and say a few words and phrases, too!

One World-Many Stories
At 5:30pm on Thursday, July 7, 2011, the Summer Readers
DROPPED EVERYTHING AND READ!
At 5:30, the library went silent for 20 minutes while the students read quietly. Congratulations to those who participated -- you set a great example for everyone who was in the library, helped to remind our community that it is important to read every day, and even inspired your parents to read, too!

One World-Many Stories
The Summer Readers met for a Patriotic Reading by Mrs. Linda Thompson on July 5th. She read "Looking for Uncle Louie on the Fourth of July", by Kathy Whitehead and Pablo Torrecilla, and treated us to some tricky riddles and funny poetry, too!
The Chocolate Moose let us meet in their back room. Thank you, Chocolate Moose!
We made spinning toys from old cds and wooden balls, and pictures that we colored:
And then we had a snack!

One World-Many Stories : Summer Readers Learn About China!
On Saturday, July 2, the summer readers welcomed our guest Mrs. Holly Summers, from Monroe Central High School, who told us about her recent trip to Hong Kong! She brought along an interesting tea pot and accessories made of bamboo, some Chinese money, and a carved jade dragon for us to pass around, and she shared her photo album of the sights around this southern China metropolis.
The book that she shared with us was "My Pet Dragon, a story about adventure, friendship, and Chinese characters," by Christoph Niemann. The book was about a girl who gets a dragon as a gift but soon it escapes. As she looks for her dragon, she introduces us to Chinese characters. Maybe some of us will borrow this book from the library and try out writing some of the characters!
Be sure to say THANK YOU at The Chocolate Moose for allowing us to meet in their space!
Holly read a great book that showed us Chinese characters.
Everyone listened closely to the story.
There were Chinese objects, like this tea jar, to pass around and examine.
We made colorful dragons...
And then we made a few cuts with scissors...
That turned our pictures into beautiful Chinese Lanterns!
It was a fun morning for everyone!

One World-Many Stories : Summer Readers Start A Round-The-World Adventure
One World - Many Stories is the theme for our summer reading program this year. All participants pledge to read for 20 minutes per day during the six week program, and to make an effort to attend at least some of the events scheduled throughout the month. As an additional challenge, they are asked to include readings from each continent, which will be recorded in a reading passport. Those who complete their passport will receive an extra prize at the end of the program.
Durning our first program, Ms. Marchal Armstead, from Unified Technology Support at Ball State University, visited us and read "It's OK to Be Different," by Todd Parr, and "Bright Eyes, Brown Skin," by Cheryl Willis Hudson and George Ford. Through the readings, Marchal reminded us that the more different we may seem from one another, the more the same we really are. Her message set us off on our round-the-world journey with open minds, ready to learn about and people, places, and cultures near and far!
Thank you to The Chocolate Moose for allowing us to use their room for our program!
"We are all different because we all have different shapes, sizes, and colors of noses...but, we are all the same because we all have a nose!"
